The Integrated Circuit
The integrated circuit places many transistors and other components on a single semiconductor chip. It made electronics small, cheap, and powerful enough to create computers, phones, and the digital world.

Jack Kilby (Texas Instruments) built the first working integrated circuit (1958); Robert Noyce (Fairchild) independently devised the monolithic silicon IC with the planar process (1959) that made mass production practical. Both are credited as co-inventors after years of patent contention.
What counts as the invention: First working demonstration (Kilby) and the manufacturable monolithic form (Noyce) are parallel, independently credited inventions.
