Additive manufacturing builds objects layer by layer directly from a digital model, rather than cutting away material. It enables complex geometries, rapid prototyping, and on-demand production.

Chuck Hull invented stereolithography and the STL format (patented mid-1980s) and is widely credited with 3D printing, but Hideo Kodama published a comparable photopolymer method earlier (1981), and other processes — selective laser sintering (Carl Deckard) and fused deposition (S. Scott Crump) — were developed independently.

What counts as the invention: Several distinct processes (SLA, SLS, FDM) were invented separately; 'additive manufacturing' is an umbrella over parallel inventions.
