Satellite Navigation (GPS)
Satellite navigation determines position and time anywhere on Earth using signals from a constellation of satellites. The U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) made precise geolocation a free global utility.

GPS is an organization-led achievement of the U.S. Department of Defense, drawing on many contributors: Roger Easton's satellite-timing work at the Naval Research Laboratory, Ivan Getting's early advocacy, Bradford Parkinson's system architecture, and Gladys West's geodetic Earth models. Parallel systems (Russia's GLONASS, the EU's Galileo, China's BeiDou) were built independently.
What counts as the invention: No individual 'invented GPS'; it integrated timing, satellites, and geodesy from many teams over decades.
