Movable-Type Printing
Movable-type printing composes a page from individual, reusable character pieces rather than a single carved block. It made the reproduction of text vastly faster and cheaper, and is one of the most consequential communication technologies in history.

Movable type was not a single invention. Bi Sheng made ceramic movable type in China around 1040; cast-metal movable type was developed in Korea, where the Jikji (1377) is the oldest surviving metal-type book. Johannes Gutenberg independently created an integrated European system (metal type-casting, oil ink, and a screw press) around 1440. Crediting Gutenberg alone erases centuries of prior East Asian work.
What counts as the invention: Gutenberg's contribution is best described as an economical, integrated printing system, not the first movable type. Printing (China/Korea) and its European mechanization (Gutenberg) are distinct milestones.

Woodblock printing preceded movable type in East Asia. Ceramic, then wooden and metal types followed; Europe's version combined a durable type-casting mould with an adapted press to make printing economical at scale.
