Fraction, Decimal & Millimetre Chart

Every 1/64" step from 1/64" to 1", with the decimal-inch and millimetre equivalent for each. Convert a fractional call-out to the decimal your caliper reads or the millimetres your CAD model uses. Search a fraction (3/8), a decimal (0.375), or a millimetre value.

Drawings call out inch fractions, calipers and DROs read decimal inches, and CAD/CAM works in millimetres — so the same dimension gets converted a dozen times a day. This chart lists every 1/64" step with both equivalents. The decimal is simply the fraction's value, and the millimetre figure is that decimal multiplied by 25.4, so every number is exact.

Frequently asked

How do I convert an inch fraction to millimetres?
Divide the fraction to get its decimal value, then multiply by 25.4. Example: 3/8" = 0.375", and 0.375 × 25.4 = 9.525 mm. Every row here lists both so you don't have to.
Why is 25.4 the number?
One inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres (international inch, 1959). Because the definition is exact, every inch-to-millimetre conversion here is exact, not rounded from a physical measurement.
Are the decimals rounded?
The decimal-inch and millimetre columns are shown to four decimal places, which is finer than any shop tolerance you'd hold to a fraction. The underlying values are computed from the exact fraction, so the rounding is display-only.

Sources

  • Exact arithmetic: decimal inch = the fraction's value; millimetres = decimal inch × 25.4
  • International inch definition: 1 in = 25.4 mm exactly (1959)
