Thread engagement is how far the threads overlap. Too little and the internal thread strips before the bolt reaches its strength. Enter the thread and the engagement length to see the threads engaged and the length-to-diameter ratio, then compare against the minimums for the tapped material.

Rule-of-thumb minimums so the internal (tapped) thread isn't the weak link. For critical joints, size engagement from the relative thread-shear strength of the two materials.

Frequently asked

What's a good rule of thumb?
About 1× diameter of engagement into steel, ~1.5× into cast iron/brass/bronze, ~2× into aluminum, and more into softer materials — so the internal thread is at least as strong as the fastener.
Does more engagement always help?
Only up to a point. Beyond roughly 1.5–2× diameter, the load isn't shared evenly across the threads, so extra length adds little strength. Size it to the weaker material, not arbitrarily deep.
