X-Ray Imaging
X-ray imaging uses penetrating radiation to reveal internal structures — bones, then much more — without opening the body. It created diagnostic medical imaging.

Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895 and immediately imaged the bones of a hand. He is the clear discoverer and received the first Nobel Prize in Physics (1901); notably, he chose not to patent the discovery so it could benefit humanity.
What counts as the invention: Röntgen discovered the phenomenon; the vast field of medical imaging (CT, etc.) was built by many others afterward.
