Edward Jenner demonstrated cowpox vaccination against smallpox in 1796 and coined 'vaccine', but he built on much older practice: variolation was used for centuries in Asia and Africa, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu introduced it to Britain in the 1720s, and the enslaved African Onesimus informed Boston's 1721 inoculation campaign. Later, Pasteur generalized vaccination to other diseases.

What counts as the invention: Distinguish older variolation (inoculation with smallpox itself) from Jenner's safer cowpox vaccination, and both from the modern science of immunology.
