Powered, Controlled Flight

Powered, controlled flight is heavier-than-air flight that a pilot can sustain and steer. Achieving it required not just an engine but a workable means of controlling the aircraft in three axes.

The Wright brothers achieved the first sustained, controlled, powered flight in 1903, working as a two-person team; their key breakthrough was three-axis control. They built on precursors (George Cayley's aerodynamics, Otto Lilienthal's gliders) and a lightweight engine. Some priority claims (e.g. Gustave Whitehead) exist, but the Wrights' documented, controlled flight is the widely accepted milestone.

What counts as the invention: Distinguish gliding and unpiloted or uncontrolled hops from sustained, controlled, powered flight — the specific achievement credited to the Wrights.
