Joseph Aspdin patented the name 'Portland cement' in 1824, but the modern high-temperature clinker cement was cumulative: Louis Vicat had studied hydraulic limes earlier in France, and Aspdin's son William Aspdin and Isaac Johnson refined the burning process that produced today's cement.
