The Industrial Robot
An industrial robot is a reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator that performs physical tasks — welding, handling, assembly — under program control. It transformed factory automation.

George Devol patented the reprogrammable manipulator (filed 1954), and Joseph Engelberger turned it into the Unimation company and the Unimate robot, first deployed at General Motors in 1961. Invention (Devol) and commercialization (Engelberger) were a partnership.
