The incandescent lamp produces light by heating a filament with electric current. A durable, practical lamp — plus the system to power it — brought electric lighting into everyday life.

Edison did not invent the light bulb from nothing — dozens of experimenters made filament lamps before him. His contribution was a durable, high-resistance lamp and the complete generation-and-distribution system. Joseph Swan developed a parallel lamp in Britain, and Lewis Latimer improved carbon filaments.
What counts as the invention: The lamp itself (many contributors) is distinct from the practical electric-lighting system (Edison) that made it commercial.
